Everything you might be wondering about Measure K and the initiatives it funds in San Mateo County.
About Measure K
Measure K is a half-cent countywide sales tax. Voters approved it in November 2016 as a 20-year extension of the Measure A sales tax first approved in 2012. It runs until 2043.
In 2012 the Board of Supervisors placed the original half-cent sales tax, Measure A, on the November ballot to raise local funds for local needs after years of budget cuts and unpredictable State and federal funding. It passed with 65.4 percent of the vote and was collected from April 1, 2013. In November 2016 voters approved a 20-year extension, Measure K, with 70.37 percent of the vote.
The Board of Supervisors and the County Executive's Office renamed programs, projects and services first funded by Measure A as Measure K, to improve transparency and accountability and avoid confusion.
Yes. Voters required a committee to oversee an annual audit of revenues. The Board has appointed 10 residents, two from each supervisorial district. The Committee meets in public at least twice a year and produces an annual report. All Measure K funds are placed in a special fund for tracking.
Measure K funding
